The City Clerk keeps all records for birth, marriage, and death from 1904 to present. Prior to 1904, the records are typically kept with the Town of Rye. Historical records from the 1600s may be kept with the Town of Greenwich.


Marriage Licenses

Those getting married in the State of New York may make an appointment to receive a marriage license from the City Clerk. Please call (914) 967-7371 for an appointment. To obtain a marriage license, you will need the following documentation:

  • Original or certified, sealed copy of a long form birth certificate (inclusive of parents' names). If the document is not in English, a certified translation is required.  Photo copies will not be accepted.
  • Current ID/ Passport
  • $40 cash or check payable to City of Rye
  • Divorce judgment signed by a judge, if applicable

Death Certificates

Those entitled to a death record pursuant to NYS must have a proper purpose and be:

  • Spouse, parent, child or sibling of the deceased;
  • Lawful representative of the spouse, parent, child or sibling of the deceased;
  • Person with a New York Court order on a showing of necessity;
  • Person requiring the document for a legal right or claim;
  • Person requiring a record for a documented medical need; or
  • To a municipal, state, or federal agency when needed for official purposes

Please note that the Clerk’s office will not send a copy of a vital record in the mail upon a blind request with no proof of identification. This includes a funeral director requesting a death record to be sent directly to his/her client. Proof of applicant’s/ client’s identification must be presented.


Birth Certificates

Those entitled to a certified birth record may be issued only:

  • To the person named on the birth certificate, if 18 years of age or older;
  • To the parents of the person named on the birth certificate;
  • To the lawful representative of the person named or the parents of the person named on the birth certificate (need notarized release from person entitled to birth record or provide a court document dated within 1 years. The same stands for an attorney).
  • To a person with a New York State Court Order;
  • To the Commissioner of Health; or
  • To a municipal, state or federal agency when needed for official purposes

Vital Records for Genealogical Purposes

  • No information shall be released from a record unless the person to whom the record relates is known to the applicant to be deceased.

  • No information shall be released unless the record has been on file for a minimum required period: birth records must have been on file for at least 75 years, death records for 50 years, marriage records for 50 years (both parties to the marriage must be deceased).
  • The time periods above are waived if the applicant is a descendant and provides documentation of direct line descent. A party acting on behalf of a descendant shall further provide documentation that the descendant authorized the party to make such application.
