Following this significant snow event, the City is asking parents and caregivers to discourage children from building igloos, tunnels, or snow forts in large snowbanks.
While these structures may seem harmless, they can be dangerous:
- Heavy, compacted snow can collapse without warning, especially during freeze-thaw cycles.
- Municipal snow piles may contain ice chunks, debris, or hidden objects from plowing operations.
- Snowbanks near roads and driveways create visibility risks for plow operators and motorists.
- Tunneling into snow piles near running vehicles can pose a carbon monoxide hazard.
- Additional snowfall or warming temperatures can quickly seal entrances and trap occupants.
- Our DPW crews will continue widening roads and
moving snow over the coming days. Please remind children to avoid playing in roadside snowbanks and large municipal snow piles.
We appreciate everyone's cooperation as we work to keep Rye safe.
