City Prepares for Winter Storm

Post Date:01/23/2026 2:17 PM

The City of Rye is continuing preparations ahead of a significant winter storm expected to impact the region beginning Sunday, January 25, and continuing into Monday, January 26. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the lower Hudson Valley—including Westchester County—due to forecasted snow accumulations and hazardous travel conditions.

“We are closely monitoring the National Weather Service forecasts and activating all appropriate response plans,” said Mayor Josh Nathan. “Our Department of Public Works crews and Police and Fire Departments are ready, but we also ask residents to take personal preparedness seriously and help keep our community safe.”

Senior staff will be working around the clock through the completion of the storm to coordinate response efforts.

WHAT TO EXPECT

· Winter Storm Watch in Effect: Sunday morning through Monday evening.

· Snowfall Forecast: Snow accumulations could range from 8 to 14+ inches, with higher amounts possible.

· Hazardous Conditions: Snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and blowing/drifting snow are possible. Delays to travel, transit, and services should be anticipated.

CITY SERVICES

· City Buildings: To encourage residents to stay off the roads, City buildings, including City Hall and Rye Recreation, will be closed to the public on Monday, January 26th.

· Recreation Programs Suspended: All recreation programming is suspended on Sunday, January 25 and Monday, January 26.

RESIDENT REMINDERS & SAFETY

Residents are reminded to:

· Avoid travel if possible, during the storm.

· Move vehicles off streets to help DPW crews clear roads efficiently and keep roadways open for Police, Fire, and EMS.

· Prepare winter emergency supplies (food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, blankets).

· Clear sidewalks adjacent to property within 24 hours of the end of snow accumulation, per City code. DO NOT shovel or push snow into roadways.

COMMUNICATIONS

· The City encourages residents to sign up for Rye emergency alerts through CodeRED and monitor updates through official City of Rye communication channels, including the City website and on Facebook and Instagram.
