The City of Rye is advising residents of a prolonged period of extremely cold temperatures and the potential for a significant winter storm.
A cold weather system is impacting the region, with temperatures expected to remain below freezing from Friday through Sunday. Forecasts indicate that daytime high temperatures from Friday through Monday, and possibly into Wednesday, will only reach the high teens, with even colder temperatures overnight. Residents are urged to take precautions to protect people, pets, and property, including safeguarding exposed pipes and limiting time outdoors.
The City is also monitoring a potential snowstorm expected from Sunday into Monday. Current forecasts vary, with snowfall estimates ranging from 6 to 18 inches, depending on the storm’s track and intensity.
To ensure public safety, the City will have additional personnel on duty in the Fire Department, Police Department, and Department of Public Works to respond to any emergencies. The City is also prepared to open warming shelters in the event of power outages.
Residents are encouraged to take time now to prepare for possible emergencies, including ensuring adequate supplies, checking heating systems, and staying informed.
The City of Rye will begin providing regular weather updates starting on Saturday as conditions develop. Please continue to monitor official City communications for the latest information.
