Good news unexpectedly causes me to write once more in advance of Memorial Day. Our Mid-Hudson region has satisfied the new hospitalization metric, one of the remaining hurdles to our becoming eligible to start re-opening. We still have to (i) see the number of hospital deaths fall (as we fervently wish) and (ii) have an adequate number of contact tracers. Please see forward.ny.gov/regional-monitoring-dashboard. There is a plan afoot to recruit local government employees as interim contact tracers pending the hiring and training of others. Re-opening is very close.
We are approaching Memorial Day weekend and the weather will be fair. Many of us will want to be out and about, even though we are still constrained by the risks and rules of the pandemic. I have written repeatedly on the issues we face as we each try to find our space out of doors. Many have written back to me with views on appropriate behavior and tips to encourage same. On this occasion, I prefer to keep it very simple. This weekend, out of respect for the holiday and out of respect for the tremendous effort we have made together in past months, let’s just take care of each other. Let’s remember what we’re about. Let’s go out of our way, in all respects, for our neighbors. If we, adults and children alike, can do this, it will be a wonderful weekend for all.
There will be special, and different, beach admission policies this weekend at Playland and Oakland Beach. Out of concern that our open beaches will be overwhelmed as a result of the continued closure of New York City’s beaches, Playland’s beach will be open only to Westchester County residents and Rye Town Park’s Oakland Beach will be open only to residents of the City of Rye and the Town of Rye. Parking spaces at Oakland Beach will be limited to the paved and graveled parking areas. Beach staff will be screening cars before they enter the respective parking lots, potentially causing greater than usual traffic disruption. Please be aware. Additional police will be present to assist. Please consult the Playland and Rye Town Park websites for detailed information. Oakland Beach has a mask rule, Playland rests on masks or social distance. Note that the County views this weekend’s opening of Playland beach as an experiment, to be evaluated following Memorial Day.
As previously mentioned, Rye’s American Legion Post 128 has arranged a virtual Memorial Day event, to be aired on Rye TV beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday. Please make this or other recognition of our fallen soldiers part of your Memorial Day.
The Rye Youth Council Better Together Benefit Event (virtual), honoring Kristin Jautz and featuring the co-founders of Grown and Flown as guest speakers, is at 10:30 a.m. today. Hurry to Rye Youth Council for free registration. Please support the good work of Rye Youth Council.
The Disbrow Park tennis courts will re-open on Friday, by reservation and subject to health and safety rules. Please click here for details.
Please have a terrific Memorial Day weekend!
