Fall 1998 Program Offerings - call for program dates and fees:
Senior Citizen Programs
The Rye Senior Citizen program is open to all Rye residents aged 60 and over. Rye
Seniors will resume their activities on Wednesday, September 9th. There is a membership
fee of $8 per year (Jan. - Dec. or when you join). An activity fee of $7 per year, (Sept -
June) covers all scheduled programs (except Computers, Tai Chi, Bridge, Cooking &
Photography). Wednesday is the Senior meeting day with activities from 1:00 p.m. and the
weekly meeting at 3:15 p.m. Activities that day include: bridge, bingo, oil painting,
bocci and billiards. Day and Overnight trips are offered at an additional fee.
ASK THE NURSE
This program sponsored by the Visiting Nurses Association will take place the second
Wednesday of each month between 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Come with your questions or just have
your blood pressure taken. FREE.

ABC's of Arts & Crafts
This is an informal class that knows how much fun it is to discover the natural and
perhaps untapped artist within each of us. Instruction for each project is provided at all
levels. Class fee includes the instructors fees and most materials. Class meets each
Monday from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.
Senior Business meeting, announcements and activities
Keep up to date with senior issues, outings and events. Join other seniors in a wide
variety of activities. There is always a bridge game, rummikube, bingo and billiards.
Refreshments served.
Coffee and Current Issues
Current Events: "History in the Making". An ongoing discussion group lead by
Peter Rosenbaum, a retired NYC teacher. The discussion topics may include: contemporary
values, *The changing family, *The Role and Future of Senior Citizen and *The evolution of
the Broadway musical. The topics will change as the group changes. The group will meet on
Thursdays, 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Starting September 10.
Computer Classes for Senior Citizens
Designed especially for Seniors to learn the basics of word processing. To enroll in session II you must have previously taken Session I. Cindy Young is the instructor. Pre-registration is required and class size is limited.
Senior Fitness
Regular exercise helps you look better, feel better and can help prevent many health
problems. These exercises are designed for the older adult and include both chair and
standing routines. Your are encouraged to work at your own pace. It's fun, but not too
strenuous. You must have your doctors permission before starting this program.
Country-cize
Exercise your body, mind, and country-lovin spirit with line dancing. Practice the
basic components found in most line dances and learn some brand new steps too! People with
all levels of ability are invited to kick up their heels while getting a great work out!
Oil Painting
CALLING ALL ARTISTS! Dabblers and Rembrandts' welcomed! If you are a beginner or an
artist of experience, you will enjoy the instruction, friendship and tips gained from this
class. A relaxed and comfortable class atmosphere will bring out the creative genius in
you.
Quilting
Learn the art of Quilt making. Class members will work on individual projects in a
"sewing circle" atmosphere. The instructor provides specific instruction and
assistance as needed in addition to a general overview of the basics of quilting. Beginner
to advanced welcome.
Golden Tai Chi 2
Golden Tai Chi will be presented as a 10 movement system designed to enhance balance
and flexibility. Originating in ancient China, this exercise form emphasizes relaxed
breathing and body alignment. It is easy to learn and fun to do! Golden Tai Chi has been
clinically proven to increase your balance. Program meets for 10 weeks. Instructors are
from the Empire Tai Chi Group.
Senior Walkers
Senior walkers will help its members add walking for fitness into their lives. Weekly
registration is required as transportation is limited. You MUST have your
doctors permission before starting this program. Contact the recreation department for a
doctors form.
Cooking
AUTUMN SOUPS AND STEWS
Learn the basics of making hearty soups and stews for cool Autumn evening fare. We will
begin with stocks - the foundation of good soups, stews, and sauces. Stocks will then be
used as the basis for delicious "one pot" meals.
FOOD FOR ENTERTAINING
The focus of this session will be on the preparation of hors d'oeuvres or 'finger
foods'. These beautiful, easy to make hors d' oeuvres will become the perfect cornerstone
for a holiday buffet or cocktail party.
PERFECT DESSERTS
This class will put dessert on center stage. Participants will learn fundamental's of
pastry and dessert making as they prepare a variety of desserts for the holidays or for
year round enjoyment.
Photography
Learn the basics of photography. How to frame and compose your pictures, the effects you can achieve from different lighting, the use of lenses, and much much more! The instructor Tom Lorenz, has 25 years experience in teaching photography.
Choral Group
Don't B Flat, B Sharp! Choral Director Noel Hart will be organizing and leading the Rye
Choir. Our first meeting is on Wednesday, September 16, 1998 at 3:30pm.
