Subject: News of the Week for March 16th, 2005

Welcome ladies and gentlemen to "Rye Police News". This is a news and information program brought to you by Police Commissioner William R. Connors  and the City of Rye Police Department. Here are the news and information items leading up to the week of March 16th. I'm your host, Officer Gary L. Olivier and our first story is as follows

A New Haven CT man spent a week in the can, (Hey that rhymes !!) after being arrested by Rye Police on the 6th. Flavio Cabrera was originally stopped for alleged traffic violations on Play Land Parkway by Officer Mike Kenny. Upon interviewing the driver, Officer Kenny ascertained that the defendants license to drive in NY St was suspended. Upon further investigation it was also discovered that Cabrera had given Kenny and other officers at the scene false names. Cabrera was placed under arrest and transported to Rye HQ for processing. Hold on it gets better. Cabrera could not provide officers with proper identification to verify who he was so he was held for the judge. Cabrera was arraigned and sent to the county jail where after a weeks time he was released for time served. See how a thing like a suspended license could snowball if you lie to the nice officers ???.

One out of the Bronx. Jeanne Neivert has some explaining to do in Rye City Court. She was stopped by Officer Angie Kennedy on the 12th for the usual. Upon speaking to her, Kennedy ascertained that her license and registration was suspended. You know the drill, jail, bail date with the judge.

More on March 12th. A couple of knob heads with nothing better to do decided to vandalize a home on Kirby Lane. The little darlings pelted the home with eggs causing the homeowners to spend their time cleaning up the mess. I can only hope someone does it to you one day so you can see how it feels. Patrol units logged a report and will spend additional time in the area when able.

A burned out headlight led to the arrest of a Glen Cove man on the 12th. Timothy Busching was stopped on Station Plaza by Officer Mike Anfuso for the "alleged" violation. It was discovered that his registration for the vehicle he was driving was suspended. Well, duty tow got the car, we got Timothy and the court got 50.00 bail. He has future court dates.

Another Anfuso story:

The 12th was a busy day. While on patrol in the Peck Avenue/Station Plaza area, Anfuso stopped a 1997 Ford pick up for the usual. Upon speaking to the driver of the Ford, Anfuso detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. Further investigation led Anfuso and Officer Ed Balls to place the subject under arrest. Douglas Bennett was transported to Rye HQ for processing. Wait a minute, it gets better. According to reports, during the arrest processing, Bennett became belligerent towards the arresting officers and "allegedly" damaged a holding cell and flooding the cell block area by damaging an eye wash station. Now, aside from the initial charge of DWI, he was also charged with criminal mischief for the damage to the cell block. Upon completion of his tantrum in the cell block, he had to pony up 250.00 bail to get out of jail. He has future court dates.

Let's make it a Anfuso hattrick:

While on patrol in the vicinity of Boston Post Road and Cedar St, Officer Anfuso stopped a motorist for the usual. Upon speaking to him Anfuso ascertained that his license to drive in NY ST was revoked. Herman Chalco of Spring Valley was placed under arrest and transported to Rye Police HQ where he was processed and later released. He has a date with the judge.

The Rye Police will be sponsering a Child Safety Seat Clinic at the Locust Avenue Fire House on Sunday April 3rd, 2005 9 AM to 3 PM. All car seat inspections will be done by appointment so to make one please call, 967-1234 and give the friendly Rye Police Officer your information. Come down and take adantage of this service.

Onward....................

Here's a strange one. A resident of Highland Hall apartments reported to police that an unknown rocket scientist or rocket scientists decided to remove the rearview mirrors on his car and toss them in the brook. The damaged mirrors are valued at 250.00. Gee that crime really made a lot of sense. I hope you're proud of yourself. Extra patrol of the lot as time and manpower allow.

More vehicle damage. A Kirby Lane resident reported to police that some knucklehead smashed the passenger side window on his BMW. The damage is valued at 400.00. This occurred sometime on the 14th. Patrol units logged the complaint and will give the area extra patrol as time and manpower allow.

Officer Washco and a "Diamond" in the rough:

Officer Washco was on radar patrol in the area of the Osborne School zone when he stopped a Greg Diamond of Norwalk. Washco interviewed Diamond and later it was revealed that he was driving with a suspended NY license. Washco placed him under arrest and processed him at Rye HQ. He is due in court next week to answer the charges.

Burglary call:

A burglary was reported to Rye Police on the 7th. After going out for the day the Highland Hall couple returned to find that their apartment was burglarized. 9200.00 in jewelry, cash and video games where stolen by the lowlifes that perpetrated this crime. Patrol units logged a report and the Rye Detectives have the case and will follow up.

The Rye Police Marine Unit responded to Port Chester Harbor on the 9th. A large floating object was spotted drifting in the harbor. Unit members responded and verified it was not a submarine but a large section of dock. No persons where seen on it and it later beached itself near the Port Chester Yacht Club.

One more from the marine unit. A seal was reported "stranded" and in distress on Play Land Beach on the 10th. Marine unit members responded and found that the "stranded" seal was not in distress, but in fact a Harp seal that was molting it's fur. Please keep in mind that this time of the year, Harp seals beach themselves on land, rocks and ice flows to molt their fur. They look lethargic but are not ill and can cause you injury if you try to touch it. The best thing to do is LEAVE THEM ALONE and in 24 hours they go back in the water.

Before I take my leave, (which of course I hate to do), how about one more Officer Anfuso story:

While on patrol on Midland Avenue Officer Anfuso stopped a green van for "allegedly" traveling at a high rate of speed. Upon interviewing the driver, a Edward Rubio of Albuquerque New Mexico, it was revealed that Mr. Rubio's prividge to drive in NY state was suspended. Needless to say, Rubio was arrested and processed at Rye HQ. He has been invited to see the judge on the 22nd. Bada bing, Bada boom. (I really gotta get out of here).
