Welcome ladies and gentlemen to "Rye Police
News." This is a news and information program brought to you by Police Commissioner
William A. Pease and The City of Rye Police Department. These are the news and information
stories leading up to the end of December 1999. In fact, the last program of the century
!! So lets go to our first story..............................................
William A. Pease has retired from his job as Rye Police Commissioner
effective December 31, 1999. Pease began his career with the Rye Police Department in May
of 1971 when he was hired as a police patrolman by Chief Charles McLaughlin. He was
promoted to Sgt. in June 1983 and to lieutenant in January of 1988. Pease first retired in
December of 1992 as a police lieutenant but came out of retirement in March of 1994 to
become the department's 2nd police commissioner. Under Pease the department and it's cars
were computerized and Rye PD became a state accredited agency. He was also instrumental in
helping to bring you this news program that was
started back in February of 1998. Pease has not disclosed what he has planned for the
future, but we wish him well in his endeavors. Detective Sgt. Joseph A. Verille, a 22 year
veteran of Rye PD has been appointed as interim police commissioner. The City of Rye has
not disclosed weather the
appointment will be permanent or temporary at this time, but on the same token we wish
Sgt. Verille well...........................................
The fast actions of a Rye Police officer on routine patrol averted a potential tragedy on
the 18th. Officer Michael Anfuso was on patrol in the vicinity of Deveraux Court and
Johnson Place when he spotted a home on fire. Officer Anfuso immediately called the fire
department and swiftly evacuated the persons in the home. Rye FD responded and
extinguished the fire which was located in the chimney area of the home. As a result of
his alertness and quick actions, no one was injured and the damage to the home was
minimal. Great job by Officer Anfuso and as always the Rye

How about an update ????
Back in January of 1999 I reported to you that a New Rochelle man was arrested by Officer
Christopher Stewart and yours truly following a high speed car chase and foot pursuit that
terminated in The Village of Port Chester. The suspect, a Wicky McGee has pled guilty to
petit larceny and was sentenced by Judge Angiolillo to one year in The Westchester County
Jail. During the chase in which my police cruiser was struck by the suspect while
attempting to flee, Officer Stewart severely injured his left knee that subsequently
required two major operations to repair.
Unfortunately, Stewart has not been able to return to work due to the severity of his
injury. As of this writing he continues his physical therapy in an attempt to return to
work. Officer Stewart is missed by the gang here at Rye PD. As for the suspect, I hope you
enjoy your stay in the can for the next year. Too bad, so sad, bye-bye !!!!.............
