|
Welcome ladies and gentlemen to "Rye Police News of the
Week." This is a news and
information program brought to you by Police Commissioner Joseph A.
Verille
and The City of Rye Police Department. These are the news and
information
stories leading up to the end of September, 2000. Our first story is
as
follows..
On August 27th, 130 A.M. members of the marine unit were sent to Hen island North located in Milton Harbor on a complaint of youths trespassing on the island. Upon arrival Officers Gary Olivier and Michael Anfuso found that approx. 30 youths had entered a resident's home and proceeded to have a party. The property owner was notified and contrary to what the youths told the responding officers, the youths did not have permission to use the home that they entered or the island. Hen island is a privately owned piece of property, there is no public access. The homeowner requested that the home be cleared and did not want to pursue charges. Police responded with a second patrol boat and with the assistance of island residents, transported the little darlings to Rye Marina. According to the home owner, restitution was made by some of the parents for the damages inflicted on the home. Well, not so bad right ??? Kids will be kids ??? Lets go to two other items that occurred while the officers were tied up with the trespassing, drinking and illegal home entering. A
couple spending the night in their cabin cruiser off of American Yacht
Club, awoke to find that someone was attempting to break into their
vessel.
The boat owner managed to scare off the intruder and call police on his
cell
phone. Now, unfortunately since both police boats were tied up at the
Hen
Island detail, they were unable to respond to the attempted entry. Hold
on
it gets better. While all this was going on Rye Police HQ received a
call
from two men that had been struck while at anchor by a larger vessel.
The
two had been fishing in Huntington Harbor when the accident occurred.
Although badly damaged the men headed for Mamaroneck but ended up near
Playland Cove amongst the rocks. Once free of the original Hen Island
detail, two officers headed to the accident victims, assisted them and
got
them back to Mamaroneck Harbor. The unit was finally sent home at
around
6 A.M. Two serious incidents occurred that had to be put on hold
because
of the partying, trespassing, home entering youths. Not to mention the
cost
to the tax payers in overtime, fuel costs and wear and tear on the
vessels.
