Subject: News of the Week for March 5th, 2001

Welcome ladies and gentlemen to "Rye Police News".  This is a news and information program brought to you by Police Commissioner William R. Connors and The City of Rye Police Department.  These are the news and information stories leading up to March 5th 2001.   I'm your host Officer Gary L. Olivier.  Our first story is as follows.......

As you can see by the opening credit of our program, we have a new police commissioner here at Rye PD.

William R. Connors took over the reins of the department back on January 14th of this year.   Commissioner Connors has wrapped up a 20 year stint with the NYPD where he began his career as a patrolman and worked his way up through the ranks retiring with the rank of inspector.   He replaces interim Commissioner Lt. Joseph A. Verille who has returned to running Rye's detective division.   We wish Commissioner Connors the best of luck here at Rye PD and also we would like to say thank you to Lt. Verille who did an outstanding job while interim commissioner.

 Lets get right into it.

A Portchester woman was arrested by the squad 4 boys back on the 5th of February.  Maria Algmin was picked up after being stopped for alleged traffic violations.   Further investigation reveled a warrant out of NYC.   After being processed at Rye HQ, Ms. Algmin was turned over to NYC warrants...

A traffic stop led to an arrest of a White Plains man on the 11th.  Carlos Leonidas was taken into custody by Officer Jose Cancel for allegedly having 3 suspensions on his driver's license.  Leonidas was processed at Rye PD HQ and released pending further court dates.

A resident of 300 Theall Road was the victim of a burglary on the 12th.  Apparently an unknown creep or creeps entered the victim's apartment while the victim was away overnight.  A 13-inch Sansui color television was taken in the burglary.  Police found no signs of forcible entry and are currently following up leads.

Lets stick to the 12th of February for a while.

A disturbance brought Rye patrol units to the Sam Goody store located on 20 Purchase St.   Apparently an argument broke out between the store manager and a customer.  Patrol units at the scene separated the two and took statements regarding the incident.   It was turned over to the detectives for further..

Police from Rye and Mamaroneck Village responded to the Rye Neck HS field after a fight broke out among some students there.  The combatants where released to their parents but not before the youth officers of both departments logged their information.  No charges have been filed as of this writing.

A window was smashed by a rock at the Rye Hospital at around 1000 PM.   An unknown person threw the rock through the window fortunately not striking anyone.   Rye Patrol units checked the area to no avail and will give the hospital extra patrol as time and manpower allow....

Lastly on the 12th.

The operator of a stolen car led NY State Police units on a chase that started on I/95 and ended when the suspects crashed the stolen car on Hammond Road.    Rye patrol units joined the troopers in the search which included K-9 units from Harrison PD   The search was called off after the K-9s lost the trail of the suspects that had a good head start on them.

Lets get away from the 12th !!!

 February. 13th.

A Rye resident reported to police that her vehicle was entered in front of 21 Purchase St.   Taken was a NYST "Easy Pass" and a Star Talk Cellular phone.  The items stolen are valued at about 300.00.    Folks, in this day and age you can't leave items in your car.  When at all possible remember to take them with you.  Don't make it easy for these low lives to rip us off.

Police responded to a disturbance on the 16th.  Residents called Rye HQ about a large disorderly group at Play Land Parkway and Milton road.  Patrol units responded to the scene and the group fled upon their arrival.  No arrests where made but patrol units did do extra patrol of the area for the remainder of the tour.  No more complaints where logged in that area for the rest of the night.

Officer Cancel, with assistance from the squad 5 boys arrested two Bridgeport CT men on the 20th of February.

Alleged vehicle and traffic violations led to the stop of the vehicle the men where riding in.  Upon further investigation Officer Cancel ascertained that the license plates on the car had been reported stolen.   Felipe Pancualt and Rodrigo Rojas where booked at Rye HQ for the crime.  Both men have upcoming court dates.

How about some good news ????

Officer Paul Kenny, a 16 year veteran of the department was ordered to turn in his silver patrolman's shield and replace it with a gold detectives shield and join the rank of The Rye Police Detective Bureau!!.    The promotion was made official in January of this year.

Det. Kenny previous assignments have included patrol officer, desk officer and firearms instructor.   We here at the PD wish Det. Kenny the best of luck in his new assignment.

An assault took place at the gates of the American Yacht Club on the 14th of February.   A young woman who is employed at the club stated she was pushed from behind and then punched in her left eye.  A group of 6 persons, 1 female and 5 male, where in the area of the town dock when she was assaulted by one of the group whom she identified as a white male, about 5' 7" tall, 17-20 years old, dark hair and muscular build.   Two cars where also observed at the scene and are described as a red GEO tracker with NY plates and a small black sports car also with NY plates.   If anyone has any information about this assault, please call Rye Detectives at 967-1234.

A resident working out at the YMCA had his day ruined on the 25th.  An unknown person or persons (and I use the term loosely) helped themselves to 125.00 worth of clothing items that where in the victims locker.  Patrol units logged the report and turned it over to the detectives.   Not for nothing but if you need clothing items that bad, the Salvation Army will give them to you for free...............

Apparently an unknown knucklehead or knuckleheads had nothing to better to do on the 26th.  A Harding Avenue resident had his car vandalized.  It is undetermined at this time what the dollar amount of the damage is. Graffiti was painted on the side of the auto.  Patrol units will give the area extra patrol as time and manpower allow.

A fight between two brothers led to the arrest of one of them on the 27th.  Police units where called to the scene near Cedar Place after the confrontation occurred.   Both brothers sought medical treatment and one was placed under arrest and charged with 3rd degree assault.   He has upcoming court dates.

Rye Police Units where sent to the area of the Rye MARRIOTT on the 28th.  A male with a hood had walked into a bank on Midland Avenue in Portchester, flashed a handgun and then fled the scene.  He fled with an accomplice in a dark colored Cadillac Seville bearing NY plates AET-8329.  The plate number given did not come back to a Cadillac.   Rye Units assisted PC in covering the areas that boarder Portchester but unfortunately it was to no avail.  The case is being followed up on by PC and the FBI.

Lastly.

Rye Detectives arrested a Bronx woman on two counts of petit larceny on the 5th of March.  Romeika Roberts was arrested for the larcenies that occurred back in February.  Roberts was processed at Rye HQ and has upcoming court dates.

Well folks, that's all there is, there is no more.  Lets all work together to make Rye a safe place to live and work. Keep an eye out for one another and report any suspicious activity you see to the Rye Police.

So for Police Commissioner William R. Connors and The City of Rye Police Department, this is Gary L. Olivier saying take care, be safe and we'll see you next time......
