A reminder: With winter here, please remember that you need to shovel the snow from the sidewalks in front of you home or businesses or risk a summons for failure to do so. Also remember that there is no parking on any public street from November 1st to April 1st between the hours of 3 AM and 6 AM.

Also, with the cold weather we have bodies of water that have become frozen over. Please stay off these frozen bodies. In many cases this can be dangerous especially in the Long Island Sound. The ice, particularly along the shore line cracks with the tide changes and can be dangerous. Avert a tragedy and stay off these frozen areas.

Onward........

A traveler on the Metro North Railroad reported to police that her daughter lost her passport on the 6th. Rye Police assisted the complainant and contacted the Metro North Police to take a report. Remember when things happen at Play land, on Metro North property and I/95, I/287, those authorities having jurisdiction take the report.

A Stamford man has some explaining to do in not only Rye City Court, but, in Port Chester Village Court. Juan Fiallos of Stamford was stopped by Officer Mike Anfuso on Peck after for (everybody) "alleged traffic violations". When asked to produce a drivers license, the defendant could only come up with a Costco picture ID card. Subsequent investigation revealed that the defendants license to drive in NY state was suspended. Hold on, it gets better. Further checking also produced a bench warrant out of Port Chester NY for failure to appear in court. The defendant was placed under arrest and transported to Rye HQ where he was processed and then turned over to Port Chester Police. Good digging by PO Anfuso.

Anyone missing a pair of Nordica ski boots ??. A pair was found in a grey zippered bag on the Northbound Metro North Train platform on the 5th. Rye Police recovered the boots and have them in the found property area.

A Darien resident had his day ruined on the 5th. Spencer McMurray was stopped by Officer Julio Rossi on Midland Avenue for allegedly operating his Cadillac Escalade with an expired registration sticker. Upon further investigation Rossi ascertained that McMurry's prividge to drive in NY State was suspended for failure to answer summons's. The defendant was placed under arrest and transport to Rye HQ where he was released on 100.00 bail. His vehicle was impounded at the duty tow yard. Too bad, so sad, bye, bye.

One from Detective Jake Chittenden of the crime prevention division.

If you plan on going away, here are some tips:

Notify the police department and they will fill out a "dark house card". The card contains information that enable the police to notify you or a designee if there is a problem. It also puts the police officer assigned to the post that your home is on that it will be vacant during the noted dates and times. You should also have the post office hold your mail or have a friend or neighbor pick it up for you. Piles of newspapers and mail is a red flag to the mutt criminal types that you are not home. During the winter season, have someone shovel you walks and in the summer, make sure someone cuts the lawn and keeps things orderly. For additional on crime prevention you may contact Detective Jake Chittenden at 967-1234.

While we're on the subject of crime prevention, in recent months Rye has been hit by a flurry of "smash and grabs" where persons pocketbooks, laptops and other valuables have been stolen from vehicles by low life's. Basically what they do is see an item of value in your vehicle, smash the window and grab the item. This is preventable. Stop leaving your valuables in your cars in plain site. If you need to leave something in your vehicle at least lock it in the trunk out of view.

A residents vehicle was damaged in a hit and run accident on the 4th. The complainant reported to the responding police unit that a black SUV with NY plates apparently struck the vehicle and left the scene. A NY state accident report was filed and patrol units followed up on the incident.

It hasn't been a banner week for the Queens contingent:

While on patrol in the vicinity of old Post Road, Officer Julio Rossi stopped a Toyota automobile for, alleged traffic violations. Upon speaking to the driver Officer Rossi ascertained the registration for the vehicle he was driving was evoked. Further checks also revealed a bench warrant out of the Town of Ramapo NY for the driver a Steven B. Kim. He was placed under arrest and transported to Rye HQ where he was processed and then turned over to the Town of Ramapo Police to answer the charges there. Good heads up by Officer Rossi on this one.
