Welcome ladies and gentlemen to "Rye Police News." This is a News and
information program brought to you by Police Commissioner Joseph A.
Verille III and The City of Rye Police Department. These are the news and
information stories leading up to the 20th of January 2000. I'm your
host Officer Gary L. Olivier. Our first story is as
follows.......................................
We made it !! The new year has come and gone and we're still here !!
Rye Police were busy in the hours leading up to new years but I'm happy to
report that for the second year in a row we had no major incidents and
the many we did have were handled quickly and effectively by your police
department........
Forty years !! That's two generations, or the lifespan of two full
police careers. That's how long Robert "Big Bob" Chittenden has served the Rye
Police and the citizens of Rye. And now Big Bob has said it's time to
hang up his badge and gun. Bob is calling it quits after serving in The
Rye Auxiliary Police and The Rye Marine Police. He started out in 1958 as
a patrolman with the auxiliaries and eventually worked his way up to head
of the unit as Auxiliary Police Inspector. Along the way Bob worked as a
summer officer with The Westchester County Police and in 1967 he gave
that up to work on the Rye Police Boat. Bob eventually moved up to senior
bay constable and after retiring from the United Nations security force as a
captain, he came to Rye in a permanent position as Bay Constable Sgt.
An imposing sight at 6' 6" tall, many boaters welcomed that sight when in
distress on the waters around Rye. Bob participated in many life and
death scenarios on the sound some being overturned vessels, heart attack
victims, boating accidents and many other life threatening emergencies. Bob has
received numerous awards from the department and the Rye PBA for his
actions during his years on L.I. Sound. A dinner was given in honor of Bob on January 15th with over 200 people
attending. Police Commissioner Joseph Verille presented Bob with awards of
service as well as his retirement ID and badges. City Manager Frank Culross
presented Bob with the key to the city and a certificate of appreciation
from the City of Rye. Rye Mayor Steve Otis, Retired Chief of Police William Hagel and recently retired Police Commissioner William A. Pease
made speeches all praising Bobs dedication and commitment to duty. When
asked what he plans to do now Bob stated he was going to relax and travel for
a while. He has located to another state. I know I can speak for the
gang here at Rye PD when I say, "Bob, good luck, good health and long life."
We're going to miss you........................................
Sam Goody was hit again on the 10th. The manager chased a black male
wearing a green jacket and dreadlocks down Purchase Street and into the
parking lot behind Feinsod's Hardware. She lost the suspect somewhere in
the lot. Taken in the larceny were numerous DVDs. Rye patrol units also
searched the area to no avail. A report was taken by patrol and turned
over to the detective division for further..........................................
Copper gutters and leaders valuing 10,000.00 were reported stolen from
The Rye High School. Apparently the creeps removed the gutters and leaders
after they had been installed on the high school. Rye Detectives have
the case and are investigating. Here's food for thought, many of our
municipal and board of education buildings have 24 hour video cameras on them so I
would think twice before I attempted to vandalize of commit larcenies at these
buildings...........

Rye patrol units were called to the end of Soundview Avenue late on the
11th. A concerned resident called about a disorderly group on the golf
course. Units responded and upon their arrival the group fled. The
Patrol units gave the area extra patrol until all persons were
dispersed.................................................
A Rye woman fell victim to fraud last week. Apparently some low-life
acquired the victims social security number and proceeded to make charges
on one of the victims credit cards to the tune of 1500.00. Rye Detectives
have the case and are currently following up leads. Now, that's all I can
comment on at this time. As I can I will release more information to
you regarding this and other cases of this nature that unfortunately continue
to occur in town. Remember don't give out any personal information on the
phone or to persons you don't know. When I doubt call us.....................................
I have a nice one for you. On the 16th Rye Police responded to 51
Milton Road on a call of a child locked in a car. The FD was called but
officers on the scene were able to gain entry to the vehicle before the FD's
arrival. This is just one of the ways the PD is there for you. As always, the FD
does a great job for our residents too...........................................
A Mendota Avenue resident got a scare back on the 16th. Units from The
NYST police were chasing a suspect operating a stolen car when it crashed in
front of their house. Harrison PD and Officer Jeffery Golanec of Rye PD
assisted in the apprehension of the suspect who aside from the stolen
car was wanted on felony warrants. The suspect was taken into custody by
State Troopers and transported back to The Hawthorne Barracks for processing.
Great job by the officers on the scene. The suspect is currently being
held....

A Stuyvesant Avenue home was broken into on the 17th. 1000.00 in
glassware were stolen as well as parts of the home being ransacked. It is believed
that an unknown creep or creeps broke into the residence over the weekend
of the 14th. Rye Detectives have it and are following
up...................
The Emergency -911phones were ringing off the hook at 5 minutes past
midnight on the 17. Concerned residents called police with information that a
car had rolled over on Interstate 95. Units of State Police, Port Chester
Ambulance, Rye FD and of course the squad 5 boys rolled on the call.
The scene was secured by the responding units and then turned over to the
state police for the investigation. No information is available at this time
regarding any injuries or if there were any arrests. Good team work by
the agencies involved..............

How about some arrests
??........................................
A Greenwich woman was arrested on the 4th of January after allegedly
leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident. Laura Gestal was arrested by
Officer Amy Spillane after Spillane stopped her in parking lot # 4 in town
following the alleged incident. Upon interviewing the suspect, Spillane noticed
an odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath. After a series of field
tests, Gestal was placed under arrest for DWI and transported to Rye HQ
for processing. She was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle
accident property damage only, DWI, and two counts of endangering the
welfare of a child. She posted 500.00 bail and has Rye Court
appearances.....................
Another driving arrest
story.....................................
A Rye man was arrested by the squad four boys on the 13th. Robert
Heidel was arrested following being stopped for allegedly speeding on Milton
Road. Upon speaking to the defendant, officers ascertained that his license
was currently revoked in NYST. He was then placed under arrest, his car
towed and he was transported to Rye HQ. He was processed and released
pending future court dates. Bada-Bing,

How about this one
??.................................
While on patrol in the vicinity of the Playland Parkway Officer Julio
Rossi stopped a 1988 Honda for alleged vehicle and traffic violations. As
Rossi approached the vehicle two suspects exited the vehicle and began walking
away from it. Rossi swiftly moved in and stopped the duo from leaving
the area. At this time he called for additional police units which responded
to the area. Upon further investigation Rossi ascertained that the Honda
was stolen out of the Village of Mamaroneck the same day. (January 19th.)
Rossi placed the two suspects under arrest and transported them to Rye HQ for
Processing. The stolen car was impounded by Rye Police and towed from
the scene. The suspects are identified as Rodrigo Carvalho and Vincent
Reyes both of Mamaroneck. They were charged with possession of stolen
property and Carvalho was also charged with vehicle and traffic violations.
Both were processed and released on 500.00 bail pending future court dates.
Great job by Officers Rossi and Chittenden on that one...............................................
Well, that's all there is, there is no more. Lets all work
together to make Rye a safe place to live and work. Keep and eye out for one another and report any suspicious activity you see to The Rye
Police. Until we meet again for
Commissioner, Joseph A. Verille and The City of Rye Police Department, this is Gary L. Olivier saying take care, be safe
And we'll see you next time..........................................
