RULES AND REGULATIONS RELATING TO SORTING, PLACING AND REMOVAL
OF GARBAGE, CURBSIDE BULK, METALS AND RECYCLING
Garbage: Collected twice weekly "backyard."
Twice Weekly: Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday (Non-Holiday Weeks)
Backyard: On Your Property With Proper Access In Accessible Location (call for
details)
- Receptacles and containers for garbage collection should not exceed 32" in height and 24" in diameter. No more than a
total of two (2) receptacles for each (1) dwelling unit or commercial establishment.
- Each such receptacle shall be watertight, made of vermin-proof material with 2 handles.
- The total weight of the receptacle, including garbage, should not exceed 60 pounds.
- Your pickup days will depend on your address; if you are unsure ask a neighbor or call the Public Works Department

- Garbage does not include recyclables or organic
yard waste.
- Respect your neighbors. Keep your trash neat and only place it outside the
evening before a pickup.
- Secure your trash from animals.
Curbside Bulk Collection will be on your second pick-up day: Thursday or
Friday depending on your address. During a week with a City
holiday your bulk collection will be the same day as your second pick-up.
Holiday weeks might change which day the second pick-up falls upon. Call for a
free holiday calendar and more details.
- Curbside means the area between street curb and property line, not to exceed four (4) feet from road.
- Bulk waste items must be placed at curbside in disposable containers no more than 24 hours before collection day.
- All curbside bulk must be tied, boxed or bagged.
- Bulk waste items currently include: furniture not greater than 60 pounds
or rugs (must be
rolled and tied not to exceed 4' in length).
No Metal Appliances or Organic Yard Waste.
- It is important that all residents understand that the following items will NOT be collected: tree stumps, sheet rock, paint,
rocks, concrete, dirt, tires, car batteries, construction debris or any hazardous waste.
- For items larger than 4 x 4 x 4 feet or greater than 60 pounds, call the Public Works Department at (914)
967-4246 to
arrange a pickup for a fee.
- Do not place bulk items at curbside except the evening before pickup.
Metal Pickup: All metals will be collected by appointment only.
- All metal appliances shall be collected at curbside by appointment for a fee of $30.00.
- Ovens, stoves, refrigerators, microwaves, etc.
- All appliances with freon will have to have the freon removed and certified. Information for this process may be
obtained by calling 967-4246.
Large Curbside Bulk Collections
Large amounts of bulk trash, such as garage and house clean-outs in excess of 2 cubic yards will be collected by appointment
with payment of a fee to be determined according to quantity of debris. Placing
large amounts of bulk trash outside your home without a pick up appointment can
result in fines. Call first 967-4246.

Christmas Trees
Trees are collected as organic yard waste. Trees
must be free of ornamentation and not placed in plastic bags. Trees must
be put curbside on organic yard waste days.
Waste Oil
Waste oil must be taken to a gas station for recycling.
Paint
Paint must be dried out to be disposed. Latex can be air-dried; oil-based can be gelled with cat litter or sand. Then dispose of
the paint in your garbage and place empty can at the curb for the Wednesday collection.
No exceptions.
Household Hazardous Waste
Materials that are flammable, corrosive, toxic or chemically reactive are considered potentially hazardous and should NOT be
thrown away in your regular garbage. Materials should be stored until the next Westchester County household chemical clean
up day. Call the County Household Chemical hot line for further information on clean up day in our area at 914-813-5425.
A household hazardous waste wheel has been developed which instructs consumers on hazards in various household products,
proper disposal and non-hazardous alternatives. Such hazardous chemicals include: pesticides, paint thinners, preservatives,
automobile products and household products, such as polishes, cleaners, disinfectant, etc. Copies of the wheel are available at
the Rye Nature Center (914) 967-5150 or from the Environmental Hazards Management Institute 1-603-868-1496.
The best way to deal with hazardous waste is not to have any -- buy the small size so you don't have toxic leftovers.
