    Welcome Rye Police News of the Week. This is a news and information program brought to you by Police Commissioner Joseph A. Verille and The City Of Rye Police Department. I'm your host Officer Gary L. Olivier. These are the news and information stories leading up to August 11th, 2000.

    Lets start on the 29th of July. As most of you might have heard the Xando Coffee bar was the location of a robbery. Apparently the night help was closing up the store and attacked by two individuals who beat him and tied him up. Monies were taken in the robbery and the thugs tried to make off with the company's safe, but were unsuccessful. Rye Police were called to the scene after another employee found the clerk bound, gagged and beaten. Rye Detectives have the case and are following up leads. As we get more developments we will inform you of them.

    Don't be so shocked folks, things like this happen even in Rye. You must keep your eyes open and your guard up. For more information on crime prevention contact Det. Jake Chittenden at 967-1234..................................................................

    July 28th. NYS Police called Rye and Port Chester Police for assistance at 5 minutes to four to help then in apprehending two men involved in a vehicle pursuit. The chase began on 287 and continued into the Rye-Port Chester area after the suspects exited on the Post Road. One suspect jumped out of the vehicle and ran on foot down Midland Ave. He was arrested by Rye and Port Chester Units. The suspect vehicle was finally boxed in at Boston Post Road and Purdy Ave. in front of Rye Shell were the driver was apprehended by Officer Mike Larkin, Lt. Robert Falk and a host of other police officers. The duo were charged with narcotics possession as well as a variety of vehicle and traffic charges. Great work by NYS Police, Rye PD and Port Chester...........................

    A couple of idiots with nothing better to do decided to destroy a Wapponocca St. resident's vegetable garden back on the 29th. The home owner discovered that the plants were destroyed by the unknown knob heads sometime overnight. Police will give the area extra patrol as time and manpower allow....................................................

    A vessel stored in dry dock at The Shongut Boat Yard located on Milton Road had its outdrive removed sometime between the 17th of July and the 28th. The area was checked to no avail by members of the Police Marine Unit. A report was filed and the case will be followed up on................

    A worker needed the assistance of Rye Police on the 3rd. Apparently the man who was doing asbestos removal passed out while performing his duties at Rye High School. Officer John Hannah responded and gave the worker 0/2 until the arrival of EMS. 2 hours later at 1147 another worker at Rye High School passed out due to heat exhaustion. Officer Richard McCabe responded and administered 0/2 until the arrival of the ambulance. (I'm glad I'm not working there.!!!!)

    A Harrison Man was injured when he was struck in the face by a bottle at Disbrow Park on the 6th. Apparently he was struck after a woman became rowdy with the mans mother. When the victim stepped in the way of the rowdy party he was struck in the chin by the bottle. Luckily he was not seriously injured. Statements were taken by police at the scene and the incident was turned over to the detectives................

    The Playland Market had an attempted entry on the 6th. An unknown person or persons attempted to gain entry to the business by kicking in the rear door. Nothing appears to have been taken and the police are treating it as an attempt at this time. Patrol has been and will continue to try and spend extra time in the area......................

    Sterling silver dinner ware was taken in a burglary at a Peter Jay Lane home also reported on the 6th. It is unknown at this time who or exactly when the items were stolen. The last time the resident saw the items was back on the 24th of April. No value of the items taken is available at this time....

    Let's take a step back to the 5th of August. 4 local youths were robbed of cash at about 1030 at night on the 5th. The youths were in the vicinity of Forest Avenue when the robbery occurred. The youths were not harmed in the robbery and were taken home by a parent. No further details are available at this time....................................

    What started out as a vessel in distress turned into an aided case on Saturday August 5th. A distress call was received by the vessel and Rye PB-1 responded and found that one of the occupants, a 5 year old girl had what appeared to be severe sea sickness. The girl, her mother and helper were transferred onto PB-1 and taken to Beach Point club in Mamaroneck. Mamaroneck Harbor Police met Rye and assisted the aided at the dock.......................................

    While we're on the subject of the marine unit P B 1 and P B 2 responded to call of a 45' sailboat on the reef outside of The Shennorock club. The vessels operator ran aground and began to list sharply to one side as tide dropped. Sea Tow was called and managed to re-float the yacht...............

    A Mount Kisco man was arrested for driving charges on the 7th. Jose Rodriquez of Grove St was arrested by Officer Jeff Golanec after he was stopped for allegedly speeding on Playland Parkway. Further investigation found that his privilege to drive in NY was suspended. Officer Golanec also detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. He was placed and under arrest and processed at Rye HQ. He has upcoming court dates................

    Onto another Officer Golanec story. While on patrol at 2 AM, he spotted a late model Lexus heading south on Midland Ave without it's headlights on. Golanec pulled the vehicle over and discovered that a 14 year old was operating it. Apparently the vehicle belonged to a 13 year old friends parents. The 13 year old took the vehicle, picked up two friends, one whom took the wheel and went joy riding. The youths were brought to police HQ and turned over to their parents.  This may all seem pretty funny but Officer Golanec's actions averted a possible tragedy. The youths have a date with Detective Scott Craig who will follow up on the event..........

    A roll over accident led to the arrest of a Kirby Lane resident on Thursday morning. Christine Donahue was arrested by Officer Anthony Rosace and Jeffery Golanec after the car she was driving rolled over at Grace Church St and Forest Ave. No One was hurt in the accident and the suspect was taken into custody after the officers on the scene conducted the initial investigation. Donahue was processed at Rye HQ and released pending future court dates.......

    Real quick. The Rye Police have two openings for crossing guards. Anyone interested please call LT. Robert Falk at 967-1234 ext 303. We need the guards for the upcoming school year so if  you're interested please call or stop by............

    A Lindberg Ave. resident called police on the evening of August ninth on a complaint of a burglary. Apparently an unknown person or persons entered the residence via a back door. It is unknown what was taken and what value. Detectives are following up................................

    A Clark Lane resident reported to police that four tires and rims were stolen from her 2000 BMW that was parked in her driveway of her home. The thugs that stole the rims had jacked up the car and left it sitting on the rocks that had been placed under the axles. The trunk of the vehicle was also entered and the spare tire was removed. Police will give the area extra patrol as time and manpower allow......................................

    A Rye woman was treated to a nasty surprise on the 7th. While out jogging the woman was confronted by a older w/male with a beard who exposed himself to her at the corner of Boston Post and Smith St. The freak fled before police arrived on the scene. Police will give the area extra patrol.........................................................

    The marine unit responded to a distress call off of Captains Island at 1020 P.M. on the 5th. Rye PD, Mamaroneck and New Rochelle respond to the area and located the boat south of Captains. After ascertaining that no one was injured, Sea tow was called who took the vessel back to City Island. On a personal note: As you can see we have included a number of marine unit items in this  weeks news program. After 16 years in the patrol division I have been assigned back to the marine unit where I started in 1984. It's an honor to be back in the marine unit and to help institute the new and improved program put in place by Commissioner Verille and LT. Falk. At this time I  would like to thank the police commissioner for the assignment, LT. Andrew Landau and Bay Constable Craig Romaneck of The Mamaroneck Police Marine Unit for their assistance during this season..................................................
