Subject: News of the Week for April 20th, 2001

Welcome ladies and gentlemen to "Rye Police News".  This is a news and information program brought to you by Police Commissioner William R. Connors and The City of Rye Police Department.  These are the news and information stories leading up to April 20th 2001.   I'm your host Officer Gary L. Olivier.  Our first story is as follows.......

Rye Police where called to Walden Lane back on the first of April. Police received a report of a woman armed with a handgun allegedly menacing neighbors. Police arrived at the scene and where met by the suspect who allegedly pointed a handgun at Sgt. Alvin Ortiz. Other police units arrived and cornered off the area. HQ called for assistance from the Westchester County Police SRT team and negotiating team. After a 12 hour standoff the suspect surrendered to police units and a loaded handgun was recovered. She was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and menacing. Following the incident she was remanded to the county jail pending future court dates. Great job by the responding police agencies who brought this matter to a close without injury to the suspect or any of the responding officers. A quick note regarding this incident. When you see something like this going on with the streets blocked off with police cars, officers and caution tape, don't approach the area and especially don't cross the police lines !!. We have our hands full with keeping our officers safe, the suspects safe and the general public safe. Keep back from these areas when things like this occur.

A sad note. It's with heavy heart that I inform you of the following. Christopher "Doc" Stewart, a Rye police officer since 1994, was retired due to a severe injury to his knee. Stewart was injured when he and yours truly where chasing a suspect on foot up Traverse Avenue in Portchester. The suspect was caught by us and responding Portchester officers and served time for his incident. Doc was also the departments first aid and CPR instructor. He will be sorely missed. So from us here at the PD we wish Doc Stewart the best in his future endeavors.

Patrol units responded to Kirby Lane also on the first. Approx.. 100' of wooden picket fence was damaged by an unknown person or persons sometime during the night. Officers on the scene took statements and will give the area extra patrol as time and manpower allow.

Two Bicycles where reported stolen from Orchard Avenue on the 2nd. The bicycles where taken from the property by an unknown person or persons. A report was logged and patrol units will give the area extra patrol.

A landscaper working at homes on Hammond Road was treated to a rotten surprise on the 4th. A leave blower valued at 500.00 was stolen from the back of the landscapers truck while he and his crew worked at one of the homes. Patrol units canvassed the area but where unable to located any witnesses to the crime. A report was logged with the responding officers and then turned over to the Rye Detectives for further investigation.

Rye Detectives effected a warrant arrest also on the 4th. Alexander Lazarus was taken into custody on a robbery and fugitive from justice warrant by the detectives. Lazarus appeared before a judge and has upcoming court dates.

A Stuyvesant Avenue resident reported to police that on the 5th of April he found an insulin syringe washed up on the beach that abuts his property. The marine unit was dispatched to the area of Milton Harbor to search for any additional syringes or medical waste that may be floating in the area. The search turned up negative results. Patrol units completed the report regarding the incident.

A resident of Theall Road was the victim of a larceny on the 5th. An unknown creep or creeps stole the residents handicapped permit from his vehicle sometime overnight. Patrol units logged a report and will give the area extra patrol as time and manpower allow.

Another Theall Road resident was the victim of a credit card scam. Apparently an unknown person opened up an American Express card account in her name and purchased a camcorder. The victim alerted American Express and the Rye Police who turned it over to the detectives for further. Keep in mind not to give anyone any information over the telephone or otherwise that can be used for these type of scams.

Theall Road again. The 5th of April was busy as you can see. A resident reported to police that opened a cell phone account in her name. The information was turned over to the detectives for further.

A visitor from England staying at the Courtyard Marriott was the victim of a larceny also on the 5th. Upon returning to her room she discovered that a diamond broach and a pearl necklace where stolen from her room at the hotel sometime during the day. Police units logged the report and turned the case over to the detectives for further.

Another landscaper was the victim of a double larceny on, you guessed, the 5th of April. 2 Backpack leaf blowers where stolen from the crew of Macchi Landscaping as they worked on a residents home. The first leaf blower is a "RedMax" type with "Macchia Landscaping" stenciled on the back and the serial # is EB-2600-1943526. The second leaf blower is a "Lesco" brand no further description. Both units are valued at 650.00.

Lets get away from the 5th of April !!. April 9th. A fire gutted a Thistle Lane home. Apparently lightening struck an electrical lead which touched off the fire. The family was not at home during this time so unfortunately the fire went undetected until it had consumed much of the interior of the home in flames. Officers McCabe, Camacho and Groglio responded and assisted the FD in closing off the area and the initial search of the home to assure it was not occupied. Great work at containing the blaze to the home by the FD and also to the police officers who responded.

Police where called to the area of the Boston post Road and Glenn Oaks Drive on the 12th. Apparently a boy friend-girl friend dispute was called in by a passerby to police who responded to the scream. Upon the arrival of patrol units police arrested Alexis Riviera for allegedly committing disorderly conduct, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. Rivera has up coming court dates.

Rye detectives acting on a tip from a passerby effected an arrest of Rye man on the 12th. Robert Bender was picked up by the cops Elm Place for an outstanding warrant from NYC Police. Bender was processed at Rye HQ and then turned over to the NYPD warrant squad. They responded and took the suspect to NYC for processing.

An alleged shoplifter led Rye officers and Detectives on a foot pursuit back on the 13th. Officer Richard McCabe was on patrol in the vicinity of the Rye YMCA when he was approached by the manager of CVS. The manager provided McCabe with a description of a man whom he stated was in the CVS and possibly shoplifted items. McCabe soon after spotted the suspect on foot on Locust avenue near the railroad overpass. Upon seeing McCabe the suspect fled up an embankment and onto I/95. McCabe called for assistance and responding officers Sgt L. Olivier and Detective Jake Chittenden effected an arrest after the suspect ran across the highway. The suspect identified himself as a Gary Serra of Larchmont and was transported to Rye HQ where he was processed. During processing it was learned that his real name was not Serra but Paulik. In addition to the petit larceny and resisting arrest charges, Paulik was also charged with criminal impersonation and forgery. He was remanded to the county jail. A footnote on this story, Paulik was also wanted on a robbery warrant out of NYC.
Great work by the officers involved and Portchester PD who assisted in the pursuit.

The squad 4 boys assisted Portchester Police on two DWI arrests on the 14th. Officer James Boland was on patrol in the vicinity of the Avon building when he was stopped by a passerby regarding a hit and run accident. Boland responded to the area by the Rye Marriott and observed a car fitting the description of the one possibly involved in the hit and run. Boland radioed PCPD and effected a traffic stop at the corner of Midland Avenue and Fawcett St. Portchester officers and Boland ascertained that the operator of the vehicle had been drinking and was placed under arrest for DWI. He was transported to PC HQ and processed for the violation. It doesn't end there. After assisting the PC officers, Boland effected another traffic stop with Portchester officers in front of Home Depot. Following the stop the driver of the vehicle was arrested and charge in PC with DWI. Good work by Officer Boland on this incident.

While we're on the subject of assisting Portchester Police here's another one. Detectives Jake Chittenden and Scott Craig responded to the area of the Kohls Shopping center. The detectives arrested 2 suspects for the grand larceny of numerous clothing items from stores in the shopping center. Both suspects had identification at the time of arrest and where remanded to the county jail pending further court dates. Both suspects are believed to be from Queens NY Great work by Jake, Scotty and of course the Portchester Police whom we have a great working relationship with.

Lastly. The Rye Auxiliary Police are looking for new members !! If you're interested in serving your community or becoming a full time police officer, this is a great way to start. For more information you can call me at 760-1849 or stop by police HQ for an application.

Let's all work together to make Rye a safe place to live and work. Keep an eye out for one another and report any suspicious activity you see to the Rye Police. So for Police Commissioner William R.
