Subject: News of the Week for March 22nd, 2000
|
Welcome ladies and gentlemen to "Rye Police News". This is a news and information program brought to you by Police Commissioner Joseph A. Verille and the City of Rye Police Department. I'm your host Officer Gary L. Olivier. These are the news and information stories leading up to the 22nd of March. Our first story is as follows................... Rye Detectives working closely with Bronx,
Yonkers and several other agencies believe they have two
suspects involved in numerous armed robberies in custody. The two suspects are
currently in Jacobi Hospital in The Bronx after suffering gunshot wounds. Rye
Detectives are currently gathering information on the duo and will release more
details when they are able to. That's all I can comment on now, I will keep you
posted. Excellent work by all agencies
involved................................... A Rye business was burglarized sometime overnight on the 6th. The Rye Smoke Shop was entered through the front door being forced open. Once inside thieves made off with lotto tickets and other items. The burglary was turned over to the Rye Detectives for further investigation................................ A Maple Avenue resident was the victim of an attempted flim flam on the 12th. Apparently two white males entered the residence claiming to be repairmen who were suppose to do work in the basement of the home. The owner accompanied one to the basement area but became suspicious when the other suspect remained upstairs. Upon returning to the upstairs of the residence, the owner asked the two to leave. They demanded money for work they claimed they did, but fled the home after the resident dialed police. Rye units responded and searched the area to no avail. Please folks use extra caution when dealing with persons who claim to be service people. When in doubt, don't let them into your home and call us immediately. If it is in fact a legitimate service person he or she won't mind if you check them out. It makes my stomach turn that these low life creeps pry on our senior citizens like this. They are the usual targets for these type of scams......................... A Dearborn Avenue resident reported to
police that some tried to enter her home on the 12th. Pry marks were found on
the victims front door of the residence. The perps did not gain entry and Patrol
units will spend extra time in the area as time and
manpower allow................................................. Here's one for the contractors out there. A worker using a pneumatic air nailer shot himself in the thigh with a 2 and a half inch nail which accidentally discharged from the nail gun. Rye Police Officer Amy Spillane responded and gave first aid until the arrival of Portchester-Rye ambulance units. The victim was taken to United Hospital for treatment of the injury. Food for thought contractors. It's not a bad idea to remove the contact tips on theses guns and replace them with a non contact type. You can avoid these type of accidents. Remember a year or so ago a young man shot himself in the heart and almost died from an accident with the nail gun. Please be careful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A Mayfield Street resident reported to police that his wife was the victim of credit card fraud back on the 13th. Apparently someone charged 3900.00 worth of merchandise on the woman's Visa card. Rye Police Detectives have the case and are investigating this and other crimes of this nature.................. A Rye Police Officer had a touch and go incident on the 7th. The officer was in a patrol car taking a report when an what appeared to be an emotionally disturbed man jumped into the patrol car on top of the officer. The officer managed to calm the man down and get him immediate medical attention. PCVAC responded and took the man to United Hospital for treatment. Excellent job by the officer who used his wits to calm the man instead of force..................................................................... Rye Units responded to the area of Purchase
street and Highland road on the 17th. Residents reported a motor vehicle
accident with one of the parties fleeing the scene in the direction of Harrison.
Harrison police later arrested a suspect in the hit and
run for DWI. Rye police took the reports and forwarded them to the state for
further................................................................... How about some arrests ??????????????? A Portchester man was arrested by Rye Detectives on the 11th on a traffic court warrant. Steven Caccire of William Street was arrested by Detective Jake Chittenden for a warrant for failing to appear in Rye Court on a driving charge. The arrest went down without incident and the matter was referred to Rye City Court..................................................................... A Rye man was arrested on drug possession charges after being stopped for alleged traffic violations on the Playland Parkway. Daniel Chiapetta was arrested by Officer Jeffery Golanec after he was stopped for the alleged violations and found to have 4 suspensions on his drivers license. After being placed under arrest an inventory of the suspects car turned up a crack pipe with what appeared to be crack residue in it. In addition to the driving charges, Mr. Chiapetta was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance 7th degree. He has upcoming court dates............................................ Another drug arrest. Officer Julio Rossi working stop DWI patrol on the 18th of March, stopped a CT. Man for alleged traffic violations on Midland Avenue. Upon speaking to the suspect, Officer Rossi ascertained that the mans license to drive in NYST was revoked. He was placed under arrest and a subsequent search of the suspect prior to being placed in the patrol car, turned up 4 packets of a substance that appeared to be cocaine. In addition to the driving charges, the suspect was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and Criminal possession of a controlled substance 5th degree which is a D felony. He was identified as David Dobrovich of Trumbull CT. He was transported to Rye HQ were he was processed and held for arraignment on the charges. Good work by Officer Rossi and the squad 4 boys on this one................................ An Internet crime arrest....... A Rye youth was the victim of an alleged harassment via the Internet. Rye Detective Scott Craig arrested a Joseph Brescia of Eastchester for the alleged crime. He was charged with Aggravated harassment and violation of an order of protection that the victim had against Brescia. He was processed at Rye HQ and has future court appearances................................................... A Rye youth was arrested by the youth division back on the 13th. The youth, who's name will not be released due to his age, was arrested by detective Scott Craig for allegedly menacing another student in a local school............. OK I have a couple of announcements from the commissioner's
office. The Westchester County Health Department is requesting that all dead
bird sightings be reported to them by calling 637-4926. Based on each case the
staff at the health department will instruct you on whether they want the bird
for testing of how you should dispose of
it............................................... We had an E-mail from a resident about when our next Vin etching program will be, so here it is. The Rye Police Department will be hosting another Vin-etching, "Watch your car program" It will be held at Rye Police HQ on May 13th from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Come on down and take advantage of this program. If you have any questions, suggestions or comments we'd love to hear from you. You can reach us by E-mailing to the address you see on your screen: Or you can write to us at Rye PD News A worker at Domino's Pizza needed immediate medical attention on the 21st after he severely cut his hand while working. Rye Police were called and Officer John Hannah responded and attended to the victim. He was transported to United Hospital for treatment. This is just one of the many ways Rye PD is here for you when you need us................................................... Rye Units responded to the area of Midland
Avenue and I/95 on the 19th on a call of a Stamford CT PD unit out with a
motorist who apparently fled the scene of a DWI injury accident. NY State police
units responded to the scene and took the motorist into custody. Rye units
assisted as needed and returned to patrol duties after the scene was
cleared.................................................... Lastly..... On a sad note The Rye Police Department sadly announces the passing of Retired Chief of Police Vincent J. Burke. Chief Burke died at his Florida home on March 12th of natural causes. Burke joined The Rye Police in 1936 and rose through the ranks becoming chief in 1959. He retired in 1961 and traveled extensively before settling in Melbourne Florida. Chief Burke enjoyed tapes of "Rye Police News" sent to him from myself and tapes of "Rye Fire News' that Sgt. Joseph Banahan sent down to him. A memorial service was held on Saturday March 25th at Resurrection Church in Rye. Chief Burke was predeceased by his wife of 64 years Helen. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. We here at Rye PD send our condolences to the Burke family for their loss............................... We have a lot of catching up to do but it would not do us justice to try and cram everything into one program. So be on the lookout for future programs with all that's going on in and around YOUR police department. This program is about you, the residents and our mission to keep you safe, healthy and informed. Anyway, for now that's all there is, there is no more. Let's all work together to make Rye a safe place to live and work. Keep an eye out for one another and report any suspicious activity you see to The Rye Police. For Police Commissioner Joseph A. Verille and The City of Rye Police Department, this is Gary L. Olivier saying, take care, be safe and we'll see you next time..................................................... |
