Subject: News of the Week for February 29th, 2000
|
Welcome ladies and gentlemen to "Rye Police News". This is a news and information program brought to you by Police Commissioner Joseph A. Verille and the City of Rye Police Department. I'm your host Officer Gary L. Olivier. These are the news and information stories leading up to the end of February 2000................................................... Our program is back on the air after a 6 week layoff. We had some scheduling bugs to work out as well as first aid and training updates, but at this time I see clear sailing and we should be back on our regular schedules. Our first story is as follows............................................... On February 19th, a white male, thin build walked into the A and P grocery store located on The Boston Post Road and proceeded to rob a cashier at gunpoint. A large dark handgun was pointed to the head of the cashier and $350.00 was taken in the holdup. Now on the 24th of February apparently the same suspect stuck up a store in Tarry Town. This time the manager of the store fought with the suspect. Further on the description is a W/M 5-11 to 6-0 thin build with blond hair in a pony tail. A joint task force involving all the agencies that have been hit has been formed and a $5000.00 reward has been posted for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons involved. A footnote to this story. At the time of the holdup a woman wearing a long fur coat had exited the Rye A and P and spoke to a person heading into the store. She stated "I wouldn't go in there if I were you, the stores being robbed." Please if you see this broadcast, we need you to come forward.......................................................... We have a new feature on our web-site which we call "Rye's most wanted." On this page will be people wanted for criminal activity and missing persons. So click onto HTTP://www.ryeny.gov/police.htm and you will find a link entitled "Most Wanted" from there you will have access to photos of people the PD is looking for. I encourage you all to do this. Perhaps you will help us bring closure to a victim of a crime, or perhaps reunite a loved one who has been missing....... We have some catching up to do so lets go back to the 29th of January. At 230 in the morning Rye Police Units were called to The Marriott Hotel on a complaint of a brawl going on in one of the hotels hallways. The squad 4 boys moved swiftly to break up the brawl. Port Chester units also responded but were not needed. Several persons were interviewed about the disturbance but none pressed charges. The warring parties were asked to leave the hotel...... The Westchester County Bomb squad was called to Rye on the 29th. A suspicious package was left in a store located at 54 Purchase Street. The store owner called police who in turn called the county. Bomb squad specialists examined the package and deemed it not a hazard................... A malfunctioning oil burner caused some headaches for a Rye Colony resident on the 29th. Rye Police and fire units were called to the apartment complex on a complaint of a heavy exhaust odor. The FD quickly found the problem and corrected the condition............................................. Hang in there people the snow ordnance has less than a month to go !!!! Remember, you cannot park on any public street in Rye from November 1st to April 1st from 3 A.M. to 6 A.M. This is our lovely snow ordinance summons time. It's almost over and I appreciated the cooperation that most of you have given us. I know it's a pain in the neck but these our the rules we have to live with............................................. Lets jump ahead for a moment. A Port Chester man was arrested by Port Chester Police on the 25th of February for allegedly breaking into cars. Anthony Federici was charged for the crime by Port Chester and later was charged by Rye Detectives Jake Chittenden and Charles Hunter for breaking into 4 cars in The Highland Hall parking lot. Federici has appeared in Rye Court and has further court appearances...................................................... A dispute between a cabby and a resident was reported to police on the 4th. The squad 1 boys responded to Indian Hill Road after the cabby reported the dispute to his dispatcher who in turn called Rye Police. The responding officers managed to settle the dispute and get both parties on there way without further problems. It's always nice when you can solve them............... I recently received a complaint via the Internet from a Rye Resident who stated that she was tired of persons not cleaning the snow and ice from the sidewalks in front of their homes after a snow fall. It is a city ordinance that you are required to remove the snow from the sidewalk areas around your homes 24 hours after the snowfall. If you fail to do so you can be issued a summons and have to pay a fine. Rye Police issued a number of summons after the snow falls we had in the last few weeks to persons who failed to clean the walks. Please keep up on this and avoid a $25.00 summons........................... Lets go to some arrests..................... A Westport Ct. man was arrested by the squad 1 crew on the 2nd of February. Chu Wyman of Pond Rd was arrested by Officer Julio Rossi after he was stopped for alleged traffic violations. Upon speaking to the defendant, Officer Rossi ascertained that his license was currently revoked in NY State. Mr. Wyman was placed under arrest and transported to Rye HQ for processing. He posted 200.00 bail and has appeared in Rye Court............................................... A Rye Brook man turned himself in to Rye Detectives on an arrest warrant. Einer Valencia was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Valencia was processed and released on $500.00 bail pending future court dates.......................... It was a bad week for Ct drivers operating on Midland Avenue. Jorge Cuautla was arrested for alleged driving charges by the squad 3 crew. The defendant was found to be operating while suspended after interviewing officers completed their interview. Cuautla was placed under arrest and was released after processing on 50.00 bail. He to has a date with the judge......................................................... An alleged traffic violation landed a Ct. man in Rye City Court on the 22nd. Richard Dejudicibus was arrested by Officer Michael Larkin after he was stopped in front of The Diamond Club for allegedly driving while intoxicated. Upon speaking to the defendant Larkin noticed an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. Upon further field testing he placed under arrest and transported to Rye HQ for processing. He was released on $100.00 cash bail and has upcoming court dates........................................ A couple of more driving arrests..... A Port Chester man was arrested on the 27th by Rye Police following an alleged traffic violation. Joseph Francois was arrested by Officer Jeffrey Golanec after he ascertained that Francious's license to drive in NYST was under current suspension. The defendant taken to police HQ where he was processed and released pending future court dates. It is unknown at this time if the defendant posted bail................... A Greenwich mans afternoon was ruined on the 28th after he was arrested by Rye Police on Midland Avenue following a vehicle stop for alleged traffic violations. James Sirra was placed under arrest by Officer Julio Rossi after he ascertained that Sirra's license to drive in NYST was currently under suspension as well as his registration being expired. Well you know the story, he was arrested, the car towed and $250.00 bail was left for the court............................................................... Let's take a quick look at some larcenies that have occurred lately....... A member at The Rye YMCA reported to police that a wallet containing 150.00 in cash was stolen at the Y sometime while the member was working out. Employees managed to find the wallet but unfortunately the cash was missing. Rye Detectives have it and are investigating............................................................. A $12,000.00 dollar diamond ring was reported stolen to police back on the 20th. The Overlook Pl. resident discovered the ring missing while service persons where in and out of the residence. Rye Detectives have suspects and are following up on it......................................................... Rye police responded to a disturbance in The Highland Hall parking lot on the 26th.. Residents called police HQ to complain about two disorderly youths throwing bottles and acting disorderly around 1200 midnight. Upon their arrival the Rye Cops interviewed 2 persons and issued a summons. They were sent on their way after the field interview and summons were issued........................................ PD and FD units responded to Davis Avenue and Pleasant Street back on the 16th. Apparently a Con Edison transformer exploded causing residence concern. The fire was quickly extinguished and the scene was turned over to Con Edison workers who corrected the situation............. While we are on the subject of fires.... A resident called the PD at about 2 in the morning on a complaint of a working fire in his Forest Avenue home. PD and FD units responded to the scene where the home owner and his family had already safely exited the burning home. Rye Police Officer Mike Larkin assisted the FD in combating the flames while the crews where setting up to battle the blaze. The fire was swiftly bought under control and the damage kept to one area of the home. A quick foot note. The squad 4 boys did save the family's two cats from the burning home after arriving on the scene. Remember, the Rye FD is always there for you.. Great job as always by Jim Dianni's guys on this one.......................................... We have a lot of catching up to do but it would not do us justice to try and cram everything into one program. So be on the lookout for future programs with all that's going on in and around YOUR police department. This program is about you, the residents and our mission to keep you safe, healthy and informed. Anyway, for now that's all there is, there is no more. Let's all work together to make Rye a safe place to live and work. Keep an eye out for one another and report any suspicious activity you see to The Rye Police. For Police Commissioner Joseph A. Verille and The City of Rye Police Department, this is Gary L. Olivier saying, take care, be safe and we'll see you next time..................................................... |
